On a more personal note…
I don’t intend for this blog to become a personal journal, but I can’t resist the urge to note here that this week I won my very first “normal” time control event. First place clear by a full point, no less. Hooo-hah. Ain’t it fun when work pays off?
We now return you to your regularly scheduled content.

(Sorry about the delay in clearing your comment. I’ve been busy this past week. I almost didn’t see it among the spam that had piled up in the interim.)
But it’ll sag a bit as I gave up a draw I shouldn’t have in a current club tournament.
The rating is up and I have confidence it’ll stay up. I’ve made some changes in my approach to studying and I think that’s made the difference. The “all time high” you noted is also a recent phenomenon, until recently I hadn’t been above 1800 in years.
I’m kind of curious where the climb will stop (it’s not unremittingly upward but the trend is obvious) but the main thrust of this site is local chess history and news, not personal boasting, so I won’t be noting every personal chess achievement I make. Just the ones I can’t resist, such as that one.
I do intend to add some instructional material sometime this year, but haven’t done more than outline it at the moment. A lot depends on how much time I have.
I was planning to be in Madison this weekend, but recent events have soured me a bit, so I’m not sure I’ll make it. The “recent events” do not relate to you and for that matter probably don’t relate to anyone involved in the Madison event, but they’ve had the effect of spoiling a little the fun I get from chess, and since the only reason I play is for the fun, expect me only if you see me.
